Why is Flurazepam prescribed?
Flurazepam is used for the relief of insomnia, defined as difficulty
falling asleep, waking up frequently at night, or waking up early in
the morning. It can be used by people whose insomnia keeps coming back
and in those who have poor sleeping habits. It belongs to a class of
drugs known as benzodiazepines.

Tolerance and dependence can occur with the use of Flurazepam. You may
experience withdrawal symptoms if you stop using Flurazepam abruptly.
Discontinue or change your dose only in consultation with your doctor.
How should you take Flurazepam?
Take Flurazepam exactly as prescribed.
If you miss a dose...
Take the dose you missed as soon as you remember, if it is within
an hour or so of the scheduled time. If you do not remember it until
later, skip the dose you missed and go back to your regular schedule.
Do not take 2 doses at once.

Flurazepam side effects
Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity,
inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine
if it is safe for you to continue taking Flurazepam.
* Side effects may include:
Dizziness, drowsiness, falling, lack of muscular coordination, light-headedness,
staggering
* Side effects due to a rapid decrease in dose or abrupt withdrawal
from Flurazepam:
Abdominal and muscle cramps, convulsions, depressed mood, inability to fall
asleep or stay asleep, sweating, tremors, vomiting
Why should Flurazepam not be prescribed?
If you are sensitive to or have had an allergic reaction to Flurazepam
or similar drugs such as Valium, you should not take this medication.
Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced.
Special warnings about Flurazepam
Flurazepam will cause you to become drowsy or less alert; therefore,
you should not drive or operate dangerous machinery or participate
in any hazardous activity that requires full mental alertness after
taking Flurazepam.
If you are severely depressed or have suffered from severe depression,
consult with your doctor before taking Flurazepam.
If you have decreased kidney or liver function or chronic respiratory
or lung disease, discuss use of Flurazepam with your doctor.
Possible food and drug interactions when taking Flurazepam
Alcohol intensifies the effects of Flurazepam. Do not drink alcohol while
taking Flurazepam.
If Flurazepam is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either
could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important
to check with your doctor before combining Flurazepam with the following:
Antidepressants such as Elavil and Tofranil
Antihistamines such as Benadryl and Tavist
Antipsychotic drugs such as Mellaril and chlorpromazine
Barbiturates such as Seconal and phenobarbital
Narcotic painkillers such as Demerol and Tylenol with Codeine
Sedatives such as Xanax and Halcion
Tranquilizers such as Librium and Valium
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding
Do not take Flurazepam if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
There is an increased risk of birth defects. This drug may appear in
breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is
essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue
breastfeeding until your treatment with Flurazepam is finished.

Any medication taken in excess can cause symptoms of overdose. If
you suspect an overdose of Flurazepam, seek medical attention immediately.
